ABOUT MADELINE

Madeline Clara Cheng is an award-winning composer, saxophonist, and pianist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is currently a freshman pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Composition and a minor in business law at the University of Southern California as a Presidential Scholar.

Madeline began contemporary classical music composition at age 12, and by age 15 was selected as 1 of 5 national fellows by Missy Mazzoli and Ellen Reid’s Luna Composition Lab at New York’s Kaufman Music Center. Since then, she has studied at some of the nation's preeminent programs for young musicians, including the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program as well as the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, for which she received a full merit scholarship.

Madeline is a 2023 YoungArts Award Winner and a recipient of the ICEBERG New Music and Lift Up Our Voices scholarships. She is the the two-time national winner of the Illinois Young Composer Contest, and the national winner of the 2020 National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Composers Contest, the 2020 Vienna Golden Key Composition Competition, and the 2022 Gonzaga Composition Competition.

Madeline’s compositions have also been performed and programmed by the BIT20 Ensemble at the Bergen International Festival, the International Contemporary Ensemble, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the New Music on the Bluff Festival, Chamber Project Saint Louis, the Boston New Music Initiative, the Julius Quartet, the Triple Helix Ensemble, and the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program.

As a Frank Sumares scholarship recipient at the Stanford Jazz Festival, Madeline is an alumna of the Jazz Institute and the Miles Ahead Big Band, which was selected to perform at the 2019 Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. During the summers, she has also studied under Marti Epstein at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Melissa Dunphy at the Wildflower Composers Festival (formerly the Young Women Composers Camp), and Eric Pham at the Sunset ChamberFest. At the Kaufman Music Center’s Luna Composition Lab, Madeline studied under Tamar Muskal and had masterclasses with Caroline Shaw, Nathalie Joachim, and Jennifer Koh.
